Our History

Background

Okpe in Akoko-Edo LGA, Edo State, is an ancient, independent kingdom believed to be founded about 200 years ago by migrants from Old Ife, Osun State. It is a North-Western Edoid community known for its rugged, hilly terrain, distinct language, and a, hereditary monarchy (Olokpe). The community is divided into 17 quarters with a, rich agricultural and cultural heritage.

Origin and Migration


Migration: The founders migrated from Old Ife in Osun State around the 19th century.

Settlement: They settled in the current rocky terrain of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.


Association

While there is a distinct Okpe kingdom in Delta State (Urhobo), the Okpe in Akoko-Edo is a separate entity, often closely associated with the Idesa people, and they are sometimes referred to together as Okpe-Idesa.
Traditional Leadership and Structure

Monarchy

The title of the traditional ruler is the Olokpe of Okpe.
Succession: Unlike some neighbouring groups, the Okpe kingship is passed from father to son.

Administration


Administrative Quarters: The community is divided into 17 distinct quarters (such as Imaiye, Ujomo, Esegba, Yera, etc.), each managed by a titled holder.
Relationship with Benin: Historically, the Olokpe received their insignia of office from the Oba of Benin, and they paid annual tributes until 1916.
Culture and Economy


Language: The people speak the Okpe language, which is distinct to the area.

Economy

The, community is largely agrarian, known for farming yams, cassava, and cash crops. The women are also known for producing palm oil, garri, and trading, especially in fried cakes (moimoi) and pap.
Festivals: The New Yam Festival is a, major, event, celebrated to thank God for a, bountiful harvest.

Landscape: The community is situated in a, region characterized by, beautiful hills and, rocky, landscapes, believed to have been formed by, volcanic eruptions.

Located in the Akoko-Edo LGA of Edo State, they exist alongside other groups in the region.


Note: The Okpe in Akoko-Edo (Edo North) should not be confused with the Okpe Kingdom in Delta State, which traces its origin to an Edo prince, Igboze, in the 16th century.
